FDA: Tamiflu patients need monitoring
By ANDREW BRIDGES
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER
WASHINGTON -- More than 100 recent cases of delirium, hallucinations and other unusual psychiatric behavior in Japanese patients treated with Tamiflu should have parents watching for similar reactions when treating their children with the flu drug.
That's the new advice from the Food and Drug Administration in adding a new precaution to the label of the influenza drug, prescribed about 2 million times a year in the United States.
The FDA updated the label after receiving the 103 reports of abnormal behavior, most of which involved children in Japan. Japan uses more Tamiflu than any other country in the world, with more than 30 million prescriptions since 2001. It's been prescribed about 8 million times in the U.S. since 1999.
The FDA said a relationship between the drug and the behavior had not been established and that the updated label was "intended to mitigate a potential risk associated with Tamiflu." It recommends that close monitoring of patients begin immediately after starting treatment with the drug.
The changes bring the U.S. label more in line with the Japanese one, which already warned that such abnormal behavior could occur. The previous FDA-approved label mentioned only that "seizure and confusion" had been seen in some patients.
Tamiflu is made by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche Holding AG. Roche spokesman Terence Hurley said there was no evidence the drug caused the rarely occurring adverse events.
Both Roche and the FDA also said that severe cases of the flu can spark the abnormal behavior flagged in the updated label.
Furthermore, the FDA acknowledged that stopping treatment with Tamiflu could actually harm influenza patients if the virus is the cause of delirium, hallucinations and other abnormal behavior, such as aggression and suicidal thoughts.
Health officials have been sensitive about taking any action that might dissuade people from taking Tamiflu, since the drug could play an important role in an outbreak of bird flu. The drug doesn't prevent flu but can reduce the length and severity of its symptoms.
Previously, Roche has cited studies from the United States and Canada that show the death rate of influenza patients who took Tamiflu was far below those who did not.
Still, the number of reports of bizarre behavior is increasing.
The 103 new cases occurred between Aug. 29, 2005, and July 6, 2006. The tally marks a sharp increase when compared with the 126 similar cases logged over more than five years between the drug's approval in 1999 and August 2005, the FDA said.
Even though severe cases of the flu can spark abnormal behavior, the number and nature of the newly reported cases - along with comments from doctors who believe the behavior was associated with the drug - keep the FDA from ruling out Tamiflu as the cause, the agency said.
Tamiflu is one of the few drugs believed effective in treating bird flu, which health officials fear could spark a pandemic should it mutate into a form easily passed from human to human.
According to the label, Tamiflu is for the treatment of uncomplicated acute illness due to flu in patients 1 year and older who have shown symptoms for no more than two days.

Don't listen to the doctors hype about all the BS. Go to the doctor when you are injured or are sick. Don't go because he/she schedules you for a check up. There is on such thing as preventive medicine. The real term is revenue enhancement.

Good old tamiflu is produced and marketed by Roche in Europe, but it is OWNED and licensed by Gilead Sciences in the US. Guess who used to be the CEO of Gilead Sciences before he became the Sec. of Defense? The torture authorizing asshole, Donald Rumsfeld, that's who. The motherfucker is worth over $100 million on his Gilead stock alone.
Oh yeah, he was also connected tightly (Chairman of the Board) to the company (G.D. Searle now owned by Monsanto) that brought us Aspartame. Aspartame was "discovered" in 1965, but didn't get full FDA approval until the mid 1990's. It got partial approval beginning in 1983 when Rumsfeld was Reagan's "special civilian envoy" to Saddam Hussein. As the "special civilian envoy" Rummy made sure that Saddam got bio and chem weapons of mass destruction, the latest in US military hardware and had the US government turn a very blind eye against Saddam's torture and rape rooms, mass executions and war crimes committed in Iraq's war with Iran. What a guy; spreading death, disease and destruction throughout every facet of his career.

One correction here Cary. Monsanto divested Serle a good while ago. Monsanto has nothing to do with pharmas or anything Serle used to work on at all. Monsanto is purely an ag product company at this time.

Thanks for the correction MuN. I missed that one. The bad guy in the Tamiflu affair is Searle with Rumsfeld at the helm.

Couple of things to consider, on December 2005 this was known:
-- Tamiflu is given orally, as a convenient capsule (75 mg), enabling it to reach all key sites in the body where the virus multiplies. The dose for the adult treatment of influenza is a 75 mg capsule, taken twice daily for five days. One pack of Tamiflu contains a full treatment course of 10 capsules. Treatment must commence within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms for full efficacy. For post exposure prophylaxis the dosage is one 75 mg capsule daily for up to 6 weeks.
-- In 1996 Roche acquired the worldwide rights to develop and market the drug from Gilead Sciences, Foster City, California.
-- Tamiflu was launched in North America (US and Canada) and Switzerland during 1999/2000. In all key European markets, it was launched by 2002/2003.
-- Over 33 million patients have been treated with Tamiflu in about 80 countries worldwide including United States, Japan, Canada, Australia, the EU, Switzerland and Latin America.
-- Tamiflu is patent protected until 2016; the patent is owned by Gilead

October 2005:
Readers can be helpful, and one just wrote in to inform us of a link that we had never imagined - Donald Rumsfeld, until he resigned and joined the Bush Administration, was the chairman of something called Gilead which just happened to make something called Tamiflu.
Now anyone who hasn't been on Mars for the last month or two, knows that there were only two things that were going to stop the human version of bird flu. One was a bird flu vaccine (which probably would work better if you were a bird) and the other was something called Tamiflu. Yes, that Tamiflu. In such short supply that the hundreds of millions of orders that have been pouring into Gilead probably won't be filled for another 12 months or so. But everyone has got to have it because somehow or other it became established that Tamiflu really worked.
This was the party line, anyway, for about a week, until word began trickling back in that maybe Tamiflu didn't work. In fact, the word on Tamiflu has always been positive at first and then eventually negative. It's a kind of pattern. We even find corroboration of it here on the Democrats.com, in what appears to be either a chat room or news roundup as follows, "Rummy was CEO of Gilead Sciences until named to the Bush cabinet and, like Cheney, still has ties that bind to the 'old company.' Now isn't it an 'amazing coincidence' that the drug Tamiflu patented by Gilead Sciences is being pushed by the National Institutes of Allergies and Infectious Diseases as the NUMBER ONE choice for flu, which, wonder of wonders, is sweeping through in one epidemic after another."
The post from January '04 adds, "Tamiflu is now also being recommended to fight avian flu ... Scroll through this NIAID page and you will find Tamiflu listed as ahead of all other recommended drugs for both prevention and treatment of flu. Trouble is, Gilead has been accused of rigging the trials of Tamiflu as a preventive treatment. Meanwhile Gilead is making a killing."
The post then gives the following link: http://12.31.13.115/...0106200324.htm)
We bet Gilead is still making a killing as is Big Pharma. Please notice now that the orders are in, the hysteria has died down a bit. Perhaps everybody is too busy counting the money. Or perhaps it was never about anything BUT the money. We weren't entirely sure, but we knew that none of it passed the old "smell test." In fact, in serial articles we claimed that bird flu probably wasn't going to turn into human flu anytime soon, that even if it did, it didn't mean that the world was in for a dose of 1918 influenza all over again. We just couldn't believe that the people bringing us Spanish Influenza Redux - with all the hype and horror - were remotely qualified to bring us even the opening of an envelope.
We questioned everything, even whether 1918 was all just the fault of a flu virus. Didn't seem likely to us then and doesn't now - especially since we've come to understand what hygiene was like for the soldiers coming back from the war, how vaccine providers apparently unloaded their stock after the war, lowering immunities, etc. and, finally how the new miracle drug, aspirin, was all the rage, prescribed by medical parishioners everywhere. Aspirin lowers fevers and allows flu to build until it bursts out all over the body with renewed and potentially mortal violence.
And that brings us to today. Bird flu still rages and, yes, it may mutate into human flu at some point and cause death, many deaths, or fewer deaths, no one knows. It may indeed sweep around the world. But of more worry immediately were moves of civil authorities to float trial balloons about mandatory vaccination and to start sending vials of superflu bugs around the world in the name of science. We demanded that our viewers call the Capitol Hill and get out the word that the government was to cease testing new vaccines, cease ordering TamiFlu and bird flu vaccine, neither of which work or will work against whatever it is that bird flu will turn into. Which at least some in government would love because then they could turn the President's apparent yen for martial law into reality. And Bush could use some martial law about now. Hell, he could use anything, maybe even a good book.
We hoped that this latest epidemic of hysteria would finally force the government to come clean about other remedies - super doses of Vitamin C and even the use of silver as an antidote. We're still waiting. Sigh.

Seems to me this is the old case of create a need and fill it.
I would be VERY interested in what Gilead's & Roche's stock jumps looked like in 2004, 05, 06, 07, and beginning 08.
They are also major players in HIV meds.

Lastly, Of All the mental type of side affects world wide, out of let's say 300,000,000 doses since 2004,
Japan has what - 16 Deaths and 110 known complications/adverse reactions caused by Tamiflu? Could it be that it's either the Japanese physiology or Chugai Pharmaceutical itself causing the problems?

Cary,
Suppose a pharma company, Roche / Gilead, aided by the typical spin crazy sensationalistic doom & gloom news media services, Gave An Epidemic, and nobody showed up?
Just how rich would that company be today if several countries with large populations , stockpiled God's next gift to stopping a fake epidemic?
In light of, the more than obvious collusion between Big Pharma, Insurance Companies, Corrupt Government Officials and Lobbying to make damn sure that the US remains Free National Health Careless, this sticks out like the 9 foot tall hirsute Bavarian giant in the land of bald pygmies;at noon;all the pygmies have passed out due to a mock Octoberfest and the thousands of gallons of EKU 28 that had been drunk;and the giant is running around waving a 20 foot long dayglow colored tiedye pennant.

We pumped him full of fluids, vitamin C and lots of yogurt (about the only thing he would eat due to a sore throat). We monitored his fever and used Tylenol and Motrin sparingly because we both know that fever is the body's natural way of ramping up the infection fighting forces and making the host a very unwelcome place for temperature and pH sensitive viruses and bacterias.
My wife and I were in extreme close proximity of the flu, but due to our increase in Vit. C and two handfulls of Algae tabs (can't remember the name of the exact brand, but it is spirunella algae) a day, niether of us got even the faintest sniffle.
I forbid the flu annual flu shot to be taken in our household (I had it once and got so violently ill from the carrier/preservative that the Dr. said I basically had the flu x2!) and instead we adjust our diets to provide us with a richer source of anti-oxidents and omega complexes. We also make sure that our house is constanly humidified (flu virus thrives in dryer air) by either keeping a boil pot on the stove or placing pans of water on window sils.
It is rare we have any serious illness, even with a two and a half year old carrier monkey (my son) walking among us. Most of our problems stem from the bizzare increase in seasonal allergies, which btw, the local allergist can't make heads or tails of since none of us showed any true allergic reaction to what we call the "Delta Panel".
Anyway, as in the days of old, anything that is ever advertised as being the "cureall" is almost always nothing more than "snakeoil".
Vit. C, Algae, Omega complexes and medicinal applications of Wild Turkey usually keep me running like a top during the traditional "cold and flu season". After all, I can't afford to miss a single hunt due to something as minor as a sick call.

First up, here are stock charts for Gilead Sciences (gild)
http://finance.yahoo...l=GILD;range=my
and Roche Holdings (rog.vx - european stock)
http://uk.finance.ya...ource=undefined
Gilead went from about a $4 stock in 2001 to about $50/sh. now. Rummy done real good with that one. Roche hasn't faired as well because of health code violations at some of its manufacturing facilities.
One of the side affects they've found in Japanese teens after chronic use is suicide. Apparently, the Japanese were sold hard on taking Tamiflu to prevent the spread of avian and other forms of flu, and they're taking (or were taking) that shit like M&M's. Suicide ain't a physiological side effect.
And lastly, Gilead got very rich off of the royalty fees (look back at the stock chart) generated by the sale of Tamiflu by Roche to most of the western and asian governments. They were stockpiling that shit like there was no tomorrow, and even had shortages back in 2005 or so because they couldn't make it fast enough. Big scam makes for big money. Think of the wars on terror, poverty, drugs and other clusterfucks invented by govt.

Considering that almost all cold/flu contagions enter into the body via the mouth or nose, consuming Turkey has the effect of killing off the bugs before they get a foothold. Surface sterilization of the mouth and even the nose via alcohol fumes, coupled with the effect in your gut via pH change and viola'! Bob's your Uncle.
Seriously, it does do wonders when consumed in moderation.
